Astro Bot is a showcase of a developer working at the top of its game, but most importantly a developer that keeps fun and playfulness at the forefront of everything it does. Finally though I want to highlight the fantastic score, because like its levels, it bounces around genres, delivering consistently catchy head bobbers, on top of slightly remixed versions of iconic Sony soundtracks. I know this OST is going to be in my regular rotation once it finally drops on Spotify, because it’s simply too good to leave locked within this game. Five new levels are already planned to be added to Astro But starting on July 10th, further expanding the number of courses and bots in the game.
I feel like I’m always discovering something new in almost every level. With uncertainty surrounding the PS5’s price following the Xbox price increase, now’s a great time to buy one of these discounted PS5 Slim console bundles. Super Mario Bros. was a formative gaming experience that changed my life. Astro Bot is beautiful, and not just in a cartoony kind of way. Its landscapes are sharp and alive with interactive details, and it seems like every pixel has been polished to perfection. All I hope now is that Team Asobo is given quite literally anything it wants to make its next game because I’m already there for it.

Astro Bot will, without a shadow of a doubt, become the Holy Grail for Sony game fans. It serves as both a celebration and an advertisement of the fun that Sony Interactive Entertainment offers.

You May Not Agree, But Astro Bot Deserves To Be The Goty
It’s boss fights when you expected them and boss fights when you absolutely didn’t. There are jokes about tech demo ducks in here, then, but there’s also the sense the whole thing is, on some level, a huge tech demo. It’s a sustained tech demo, one that never runs out of new wonders to show you, new marvels to fling at you and swiftly discard.
It’s just a shame there’s not more of those levels, as that’s when the game is at its peak in terms of game design – along with one-off themes like a day/night world that you can switch between with the press of a button. Graphics aren’t the only presentational element that can elevate a game, and Astro Bot proves that perfectly, but in gameplay terms the most interesting ideas are the many and varied power-ups. Some are fairly straightforward, like the bulldog rocket that shoots you horizontally forward and can damage objects, while a rooster one can shoot you vertically in the air, which is used to pull objects out of the ground. Once they’re collected, the characters go to hang out on a hub world and you can randomly unlock gatcha toys that provide them with a little diorama or accessory to act out something from their game, like in Astro’s Playroom.
Needless to say, Astro Bot exceeded my expectations by being nearly perfect in almost every aspect of the game. As I collected them, I found myself getting surprisingly emotional as deep-cut games I grew up with got their lovingly crafted due. Every time I found an old friend, I was transported back to that kid in the backroom of my parent’s house playing PS1. The unbridled joy I felt when firing up a game I’d never seen before came flooding back to me.
If you watch long enough, you’ll see that one of them is actually a generic bot. The fun factor is unparalleled for a game of this genre, despite it’s obvious simplicity. The biggest thing to take away from the game is how well it uses the DualSense to its advantage. The usage of the controller’s haptic feedback, gyro controls, and adaptive triggers makes the game a way better experience. Not only that, the game also has unique gimmicks in each level, which make them fresh and interesting to play. Team Asobi further drills down on the toy-like charm of gaming by fully committing to the DualSense’s unique features.
They’re usually just tied up or waving for help or, in the case of Solid Snake, just hanging impotently from a tree. The characters make for fun rewards for completing a level, or finding a secret, but as a tribute to the games they originate from they’re almost entirely useless. Although half of the bots you’re rescuing look identical to Astro, just without the cape, the other 150 are all based on characters from other games. Or rather they’re normal bots cosplaying as characters from other games. These cameos are far more extensive than we expected and include not just deep cuts from Sony’s back catalogue but references to games from Activision, Konami, Embracer Group, Atlus, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and others.
